Ryan received his B.S. and Ph.D. from the University of Waterloo located in Ontario, Canada. He completed his doctoral thesis under the supervision of Prof. Scott Taylor, which focused mainly on the synthesis and action mechanism of daptomycin. In the van der Donk lab, Ryan spends his time investigating new ways to access unusual stereoisomers of lantibiotics, and understanding the action mechanism of two-component lantibiotics.
