Youran was raised in the hometown of Hot pot-Chongqing, China, and earned his B.S. from Sichuan University. As a staunch advocate for organic synthesis as the cornerstone of chemical research, he refined his skills in Prof. Gary Molander's lab at the University of Pennsylvania, focusing on photoredox-nickel catalysis. Driven by a quest for mild and selective catalysis in complex systems, he naturally transitioned to enzymology. Presently, Youran works on the biosynthetic mechanisms and bioengineering to harness the stereochemistry of lanthipeptides.
