Tung was born in Hanoi, the capital city of Vietnam, where he lived for 20 years before coming to the U.S. He received a B.S. in Biochemistry from Texas Christian University where he synthesized a library of triazine derivatives to look for antibacterial activity and investigated the mechanism of whiskey lactone formation. Tung came to UIUC in 2017 for graduate study. In the van der Donk lab, his research revolves around the promiscuous lanthipeptide synthetase ProcM with a particular focus on applying bioengineering techniques on ProcM in order to discover lanthipeptides with improved activity. In his free time, he likes to listen to music, play basketball, and go hiking with his dogs.
